advent believing god bible reading christmas prayer ideas daily bible reading plan faith Dec 17, 2024

Mary wasn't Jesus' grandmother, she was his mother. But her name is included in Matthew's list and it is so very significant.

These devotions accompany my podcast series: Jesus' Spicy Grannies.

We forget that although Mary is central in the story of Jesus' birth, she was also present at his death. What an amazing and remarkable woman who suffered greatly to be used so intimately in God's salvation plan.

Take time to sit with Mary this week:

Here are five daily Bible readings that highlight key moments in the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus, from both the Gospels and the Old Testament. These passages offer a deeper understanding of her role and faith:

Day 1: The Annunciation

Luke 1:26-38
This passage details the moment when the angel Gabriel appears to Mary to announce that she will conceive Jesus, the Son of God. Mary's humble acceptance of God's will is exemplified in her response, "I am the Lord's servant... May your word to me be fulfilled."

Key Verse:
"I am the Lord's servant... May your word to me be fulfilled." (Luke 1:38)

Day 2: Mary's Visit to Elizabeth

Luke 1:39-56
Mary visits her relative Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist. This encounter results in the Magnificat, Mary's song of praise and thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness and mercy.

Key Verse:
"My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant." (Luke 1:46-48)

Day 3: The Birth of Jesus

Luke 2:1-20
This passage recounts the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Mary, along with Joseph, witnesses the humble arrival of the Savior. She treasures these moments in her heart, pondering the significance of the events.

Key Verse:
"But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart." (Luke 2:19)

Day 4: The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple

Luke 2:22-40
Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord, as required by Jewish law. Simeon and Anna recognize Jesus as the Messiah, and Simeon prophesies about Mary's future suffering.

Key Verse:
"And a sword will pierce your own soul too." (Luke 2:35)

Day 5: Mary at the Cross

John 19:25-27
At the foot of the cross, Mary watches as her son, Jesus, is crucified. In this moment of immense grief, Jesus entrusts His mother to the care of the Apostle John.

Key Verse:
_"When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, 'Woman, here is your son,' and to the disciple, 'Here is your mother.'" (John 19:26-27)

These passages provide a balanced view of Mary's life, from her joyful acceptance of God's plan to her sorrowful presence at the crucifixion, and they help us understand her pivotal role in God's salvation story.
