Love--Advent Christmas Eve
Dec 21, 2023I hope that you will finish out your advent season by lighting these final 2 candles; one on Christmas Eve and the other on Christmas Day. We will light our Love candle after 4 Christmas Eve services at church on Christmas Eve. It's going to be good to all sit around the table together, enjoy our meal and spend a few minutes talking about LOVE.
Ask: How do you define love? Share a time when you especially felt loved.
How does the world define love? Do you think people feel loved?
Invite everyone to quote John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
How did God express His love? (by sending Jesus)
What did Jesus do to demonstrate the love of God?
Did He come to judge the world?
Invite someone to read the verses that follow John 3:16, John 3:17-18
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
What are these verses saying?
Share this: These verses are saying that Jesus came to save us--from what? Our sins, that create our confusion. He also came to save us from ourselves, and our mistakes. He came to save us from the devil who wants to devour us. We needed saving because we were already guilty of sin and we were separated from God. Now that Jesus has come, our guilt can be wiped away, and we can connect with God if only we believe that Jesus is His Son who came to save us.
When Jesus died on the cross, He stretched out His arms to embrace all of us. There's an old gospel song that says this, "When He was on the cross, I was on His mind."
Think about that, Jesus was looking at the crowd of people who gathered there that day, but He knew that His death was for all the people who'd lived on earth before He got there, and all of us who would be here after He left.
"He looked ahead in time, and When He was on the cross, I was on His mind.
He knew me, yet he loved meHe whose glory makes the heavens shineSo unworthy of such mercyYet when he was on the crossI was on his mind."
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son.
that's what love is, giving your very best when it costs you all you got with no strings attached, no guarantees and nothing in return.
Pray: Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to earth as a baby, vulnerable and real. Thank You for growing up sinless, and showing us how much God loves us. Thank You for being obedient to give Your life as a ransom for all of us, and for demonstrating what true LOVE really is. We love You, LORD and we worship You tonight. Amen.
